2010 Olympics Games

In February, Vancouver Canada will be the world stage for the 2010 Winter Games.  Athletes from around the world have no doubt spent countless hours perfecting their particular sport and dreamt of winning the elusive gold medal.

In these games, the Canadians have spent billions getting ready to spotlight the beautiful Canadian landscape and lifestyle as well they should.

I love the Olympics for many reasons.  I recall how the power of the song Silent Night on a Christmas Eve during World War II stopped the fighting briefly between the British and Germans soldiers while a joint chorus of the song was sung on the battlefield.

For just a brief moment during the Olympic Games, we soften the boundaries that divide nations around the world and let our athletes take the stage to represent our country in a positive endeavor.

Many seniors will take the trip north to see the games live.  Notice that what we refer to as an international border is just an imaginary line.  There isn’t anything tangible there that divides our country from Canada.

Rather than being an imaginary line that divides us from the Canadians or any other country in the world, perhaps in February we can see these border crossings as just boundaries of relationship.  Perhaps, if only for a few moments we can see the wonder of our humanity, fairness, compassion and competition instead of the all too common expressions of power, control and domination.

Perhaps the accumulated wisdom of our senior population can contribute to the Olympics and help create a truly timeless moment where suddenly no boundaries exist in the world.  For the athletes the “no boundary moment” is called being “in the zone”.  Can the people watching the Olympics be “in the zone” as well?

Finally, most seniors will be completely satisfied to observe the Olympic competitors and cheer their favorites.  But for those seniors who refuse to accept age as any kind of barrier to personal competition, then get ready for the Senior Summer Games.

The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) is a non-profit member of the United States Olympic Committee.  The ultimate goal is to encourage senior men and women everywhere to live a healthy lifestyle.

The NSGA serves as a coordination point for state level organizations that host competitive senior events and is committed to providing support for research and education initiatives that help seniors stay active and fit.

It’s amazing that we have the Olympic games, given the state of the world. It really is such a cool moment where the world comes together for love, rather than war or tragedy.
